Hip Hop top 10
30 April 2006 in Random | Comments (0)
At work, we were talking about the best Hip Hop tunes of all time, the arguments were flyin’ back and forth, so in reply, Mr Daniel Farmer (part time award winning comedian and one time Hip Hop aficionado) came up with the definitive list, repeated in full below. - FACT.
NWA - Straight Outta Compton. Its not the best rap tune. Its not the best Gansta rap tune. Its not even the best NWA joint. So why does it make the list? Because its where rap blew up, where it reached out. Suddenly there was a window into black ghetto life for white boys in Upminster, and for 6 weeks you wasnt nothing unless you was rolling with Easy, Ice, Dre & Ren.
Eric B & Rakim - I know you got soul. I had to have a rakim joint up in here. Its the law. There are a few reasons, so here are the best of them. You can listen to debates about who had the best skillz on tha mic. Biggy, Pac, Q-Tip, Cube, Snoop, Pun, so on & so on. But Rakim was first. He didnt have a studio, he had a mic and a DJ. And still his skillz compare with anyone. 2nd reason, you listen to any Eric B & Rakim song, & you will here a beat you have heard elsewhere, you will hear samples you’ve heard elsewhere, you’ll even hear lyrics you recognise. But where did they come from originally? From Rakims mouth and from Eric Bs 22 10s. Stick it on & kickback, you are listening to history.
A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhime. As a reaction to Gangsta, crews promoting peace and knowledge began to hit the scene by the turn of the 90s, including the Jungle Brothers, De la Soul and Tribe called quest. Including many of my favourite lyrics of alltime (to those who cannot see beyond the gangsta lifestyle:- “Hip hop can never be a way of life, It couldn’t tell you how to raise a child or treat your wife”), ‘The Low end Theory’ was one of the best Hip Hop albums period.
Cypress Hill - How I could just kill a man. When Hip Hop blew up, MTV were all over it like Bodell at a buffet table. They knew it was going to be the big news for years to come, but they needed to find the band that would define the genre. Cypress Hill became that ticket. Whilst ‘Insane in the Brain’ blew up all over the world, ‘Kill a man’ was the joint that made the hip hop world sit up, listen, but most importantly, nod their collective heads. Hit it up, roll a fatty and marvel at my bearded looky likey, B-Real as he tells it like it is, West Coast gangsta style.
EPMD - Rampage. This joint makes it in for a few reasons. Firstly, its EPMD at their finest. Secondly, its 3 rappers and a DJ, the classic crew set. This is how Rap was when it was born, MCs telling you how bad they was, with a Dj supplying the beats & the scratches. Thirdly, it allows me to get LL Cool J in without allocating him a record. Finally, It has some of the best bassline/scratch examples of them all. Oh, and it lets me maintain my rep by telling you that I know what ‘EPMD’ stands for and you dont. FACT.
Eminem - Without me. I was sat here trying to think of the best Hip Hop record ever recorded by a white man in order that I could show off my knowledge, and prove that them white boys gots tha flow. I was thinking ‘3rd Bass’, ‘House of Pain’ ‘Vanilla Ice’. I hadnt even thought of Eminem for one single reason. He’s that good, that I don’t even think of him as the best White rapper, I think of him as one of the best ever, full to tha stizzopp.
JayZ - 99Problems. JayZ gots to be up in here. Anything that comes from the Hip Hop world comes via this playa. Arguably the greatest rapper of alltime, JayZ writes, raps, produces, designs, finances and shags beyonce. To pick one of his efforts is to do him a disservice. I went for 99 problems, I could easily have gone for ‘Hardknock life’, ‘H to tha izzo’, ‘Girls’, ‘Wishing on a star’ etc etc. The ultimate lifestyle playa with a sack of platinum plaques.
Kanye West - Touch the Sky. The future of Hip Hop? This artist is the lovechild (creatively speaking) of JayZ and Damon Dash, you dont have to be that good to go far with those two behind you. But he is. And he will. Have this tune come on when you are stepping the pavement, and suddenly you’ve gots tha funk in yo trunk, tha roll in yo bowl, you know what I’s sayin?
Wu-Tang clan - C.R.E.A.M. A New York collective, the Wu blew up onto the scene in 94 and kept straight banging till the millenium. With a sound that fused oriental king fu samples with old school jazz & soul beats, their debut album, 36 chambers, was on replay lists all over. Its perhaps an indication of the quality of the colective that every one of them recorded a solo album after 36 Chambers, and every single one of them made it to the top 10 album chart. Eat that Boyzone.
As for track 10, where do I start? Its more a case of ‘Who do I leave out?’, I guess. There isn’t room to have Dre, Snoop, Public Enemy, Biggie, Pac, Cube, Nas, no room to explore Hip Hop from outside of NewYork/LA like the Houston/Atlanta sounds, no room for 100 other joints that define the genre. I guess I’ll go with Public Enemy - ‘He Got Game’ and let you work out the rest for yourself

Running (Or Lack of thereof!)

For those who have been wondering how my running has been going (I will be running the Flora London Marathon in 5 weeks ). My mileage has been steadily increasing to over 50 miles a week, running the 7 miles to work regularly and occasionaly running back too, as well as the excellent adiruns every wednesday around Hyde Park, top marks to Adidas there for organising them.
Unfortunately, lately, I have had an achiles tendon injury which made me pull out of the Adidas Flora Half Marathon at Silverstone after half a mile, shit happens I suppose! I did’nt even get to make brmmm brmmmm car sounds when I went round the famous curves! and, to paraphrase, I have no ordinary time by to set my worth. I was aiming for Sub 1H 45M after what I have done in training, If I can make it, the paddock wood half is now the replacement, coming just 3 weeks before the big one! Cross ya fingers all
Updates, updates, we all love an update
